The Evolution of Science and Technology Parks into Future-Ready Areas of Innovation

Science and Technology Parks (STPs) have historically driven technology transfer and economic growth, but in an interconnected world, they must evolve into Areas of Innovation (AoIs)—dynamic ecosystems fostering collaboration at a global scale. Rather than being outdated, STPs serve as the foundational building blocks of AoIs, providing the infrastructure, university linkages, and governance models necessary for innovation.  

Drawing on insights from Juan Antonio Bertolín’s PhD research and the Draghi Report (2024), this paper highlights the transformation of STPs from real estate-based clusters into international knowledge hubs. Case studies such as 22@ Barcelona, Berlin Adlershof, and Medellin Innovation District showcase successful models that integrate academic collaboration, urban innovation, and technology-driven growth.
