Cross-border collaboration in Southeastern Europe

Cross-border innovation in Southeastern Europe continues to gain momentum through strategic partnerships. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IASP member Thess INTEC – Thessaloniki Innovation & Technology Center (Greece), and Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN IPS) marks a significant step in consolidating collaboration across the region. The agreement signed in Thessaloniki builds on a partnership initiated a year ago and reflects its evolution into a more cohesive regional framework.

The collaboration establishes a strengthened connection between industry, academia, and research institutions across Southeastern Europe, reinforcing shared efforts to foster innovation-driven growth and knowledge exchange.

The signing ceremony brought together a diverse group of stakeholders. Their participation reflects the strong commitment to advancing cross-border collaboration in the region. Within the framework of the MoU, particular attention is given to sectors such as the Blue Economy and aquaculture. Northern Greece’s established industrial base and research capabilities provide a strong foundation for knowledge transfer and sectoral development across the region.

Professor Eden Mamut (BSUN Secretary General) highlighted the broader role of Thess INTEC, noting that it is emerging beyond the national initiative into a regional innovation hub that integrates talent, creativity and competitive advantages from multiple countries. This perspective underscores the growing importance of regional ecosystems in addressing shared challenges and opportunities.
