IASP member Science Park Mjärdevi has a new name: following a decision by the Linköping City Council, the Swedish park will now be known as Linköping Science Park as it continues its work supporting the innovative business community.
Originally founded in 1984, the park has since grown into an innovation environment that includes about 400 companies and 7,000 employees. Mjärdevi is a neighbour of Linköping University and today has the highest concentration of innovative and knowledge-intensive companies in Linköping.
In parallel with the municipality’s efforts to develop physical innovation environments, a number of cluster organizations have been initiated by Region Östergötland with the aim of strengthening the region’s excellence in a number of key areas, including large investments in agriculture and life science.
In 2013, Vreta Cluster was established to focus on green industries, and is both a cluster and a physical innovation environment. Another city-wide innovation environment known as Ebbepark is currently under construction, and is set to include housing, training facilities and schools. The municipality also plans to develop an innovative environment for material companies in connection with the airport and Saab.
Lena Miranda, CEO of Science Park Mjärdevi and IASP European Division President, commented:
“I welcome the development. As Linköping and the region grow and attractiveness increases, higher demands are placed on our ability to coordinate and communicate our offering to the outside world. The investment in a Linköping Science Park will strengthen Linköping’s tech profile both locally, nationally and internationally.
"The park holds one of Northern Europe’s foremost ICT clusters, and the IT industry in Östergötland grew twice as much in 2018 as the rest of the country. It is a huge strength when we are going to change and secure more industries. We carry a proud history, but we also have great potential in our future. Together with our sister company Sankt Kors, which builds and develops courageous environments and with the region’s investments in future industries, Linköping Science Park is a natural and obvious next step.”
