Background information
Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) is the largest women’s university in the world, located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Established in 1970 as the first College of Education for women in the Kingdom, it evolved into a comprehensive university in 2008, named in honour of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman. The university gathers over 30 colleges and specialised research centers, including a well-established Health and Natural Sciences Center. It is active in fields like public health, genetics, pharmaceuticals, and AI applications in healthcare. The presence of a fully operational university hospital also supports both applied research and clinical education. It offers internal funding, student innovation programs, and has mechanisms in place for IP registration and commercialisation. Additionally, the Technology Transfer Office is active, and they’re currently planning sector-based innovation zones on the campus that align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. PNU’s campus includes over 600 smart buildings, a metro system, and a unique digital innovation hub called “CODE Lab,” which supports early-stage startups and digital entrepreneurship. Currently 63 companies are incubated. Their labs are equipped for advanced research in areas like genomics and biotech, and their Biobank has international certifications including ISO 20387 and CTRNet affiliation. PNU collaborates with leading universities and research centers both within Saudi Arabia and internationally, and it is actively engaged in community-focused innovation activities, awareness programs, and public-private partnerships.
