Description:

Ngulia is a rhino sanctuary in Tsavo West, Kenya. Project Ngulia started in 2014 as a pilot project on border security defined by the Kenyan government. The main goal of project Ngulia is to provide cost-effective innovative technical tools to the park rangers to contribute to anti-poaching (border protection and intruder detection) as well as animal welfare. Since the project started, poaching has almost stopped, and the rhino population has more than doubled.

In a first phase, a solution was developed to digitize the daily workflow with a reporting app for the rangers and a web-based dashboard for the officers, providing real-time reports and surveillance from the field. In the second phase, sensor systems are added to provide the rangers with super-eyes and super-ears. Project Ngulia is a collaboration with Kenyan and Swedish companies and innovation environments, from which the company Qulinda has been spun off focusing on Swedish livestock.
