IDOM leads first metro system project in Ireland

MetroLink, the first metro system in Ireland has now entered its delivery stage. This strategic infrastructure project will connect southern Dublin with the City center, the airport, and the town of Swords to the north. The 26 km line will be fully automated with driverless trains, operating at high frequency and capable of transporting up to 20,000 passengers per hour in each direction. 

IASP member IDOM has been part of the core team of this pioneering project since its inception, providing engineering services for MetroLink for almost a decade. During this time, the teams have developed the reference design and guided the client through the regulatory process including environmental impact studies, public consultations and legal procedures necessary for the project’s approval. 

IDOM was awarded the contract for this ambitious project, which is expected to be delivered in 5 stages, from preliminary design to commissioning. The project started in 2018, its delivery stage has been now reached and on the next 3-4 years its expected to be running. MetroLink is designed to meet the needs of Dublin's society, and in this context, IDOM is helping to develop an Urban Transport 4.0 system. The project will integrate with the main public transportation networks making it contribute to a more sustainable, accessible and efficient mobility model. 

The start of the delivery phase marks a significant landmark in the realization of MetroLink and in positioning Dublin alongside other major European capitals in terms of public transportation.
