Edmonton positions itself as a hub for hydrogen innovation

The city of Edmonton is rapidly positioning itself as a leading hub for research in hydrogen production, with more than $30 billion in new hydrogen projects anticipated in the region. IASP member Edmonton Research Park is home to initiatives focused on hydrogen-powered vehicles, delivery of hydrogen to homes and businesses, and the use of hydrogen as an alternative to electricity from the power grid, among other applications.
One of these projects, led by Dark Matter Materials, is advancing the production of cheaper and more environmentally friendly hydrogen through a new methodology. The new approach, developed by CTO Dr. Robin Hamilton, mixes earth-abundant metals with water, allowing hydrogen to be produced at much lower temperatures, reducing both production costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Hydrogen power has the key advantage that its use produces only heat and water vapour, making it a far more environmentally friendly option. Compared to existing battery technologies, it is also better suited for long-distance haulage. As a result, hydrogen production is expected to play an important role in sustainable innovation, offering a potential alternative to both fossil fuels and battery power for vehicles and remote communities.
Low-carbon and smart innovation spaces are a key priority for many IASP members. We currently maintain a very active sustainability subnetwork, conducting webinars and dedicated activities, and the topic was also a key focus at IASP Beijing 2025, where members shared their own experiences and strategies to reduce carbon emissions and explore sustainable uses for hydrogen. Examples such as these show the tangible impact our industry is having in driving the transition toward a more sustainable future.
Edmonton Research Park will host the 2026 IASP North American Division Event, taking place on 14–16 May 2026. Keep an eye on the IASP website and social media channels for registration details and a chance to explore the city’s innovation ecosystem firsthand.
