In August, we asked members if their park worked with the open innovation concept. This follows up from a question we asked in 2011, when 22% of respondents indicated they did not know what the concept was.

We can see that the Open Innovation concept has taken off since 2011, when only 52% had some form of service or activities based on open innovation: this has now increased to a total of 79.6%.

25% told us that they are using open innovation as an outside-in process', enriching knowledge for the STP, and a similar proportion (20.5%) responded that for them it is more of an inside-out process', earning profits by bringing ideas to the market.

These two perspectives are not mutually exclusive: 34.1% told us they work with a combination of both processes and in active collaboration with other parks. It is interesting to note that of those respondents who currently do not work with the open innovation concept (in total 20.4%), 15.9% said that they are considering it, leaving only 4.5% who are neither working with it nor thinking of doing so in the future.
