Description:

This paper explores the role of startups and incubators in driving the Science and Technology Park (STP)

agenda in a developing entrepreneurial ecosystem. The Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in

Kenya provides a case study for this exploration. The paper examines the unique entrepreneurial

ecosystem of the university, comprising the incubator, startup, research centers, support centers, and

the STP. It highlights the critical role of incubators and startup centers in enabling innovation and

supporting startups by providing a conducive environment for growth, facilitating collaboration, and

connecting local startup communities, investors, academia, technology companies, and the private

sector. The paper also discusses various DeKUT Startup and Incubation Centre (DeSIC) programs to

promote and train entrepreneurship and improve entrepreneurial competency among students and

staff. Finally, the paper emphasizes the need for a systematic approach to enhancing the activities of

critical players in the startup process, like incubators and startup centers, in a developing entrepreneurial

ecosystem.
