Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is a public institution, created in 1934 from the merger of faculties and autonomous schools that emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries. Throughout its history, UFRGS maintains its commitment to excellence in teaching, research and extension, generating new knowledge, culture, scientific and technological innovation for the economic and social development of Brazil.

Recognized nationally and internationally, UFRGS appears in the main university rankings as one of the best universities in the country and Latin America. Academic quality is guaranteed by highly qualified teachers and administrative technicians, by the dedication of students, by the relevance of the scientific research carried out and by the establishment of interactions with Brazilian and foreign institutions.

Located in the Southern Region of Brazil, UFRGS has its headquarters in the municipality of Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its university community brings together more than 55 thousand people, who travel across its five campuses, four of which are in Porto Alegre (Campus Centro, Saúde, Olímpico and Vale), and one on the North Coast, in the municipality of Tramandaí. Currently, more than 100 undergraduate courses, 82 academic master’s programs and 72 doctorate programs are offered free of charge, thus covering all areas of knowledge.

Its structure is made up of 28 academic units – colleges, schools and institutes. It has more than 700 research groups, several laboratories and libraries, museums, university restaurants, cinema and theater rooms, a cultural center, among other services and structures.
