Objectives

The FutuMed initiative represents a transformative milestone for Medellín, establishing the city’s first Special Treatment Zone (ZTE) dedicated to science, technology and innovation. Led by Ruta N, with the strategic support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the project is focused on developing a mature innovation ecosystem capable of addressing complex healthcare challenges and converting them into drivers of sustainable economic growth.

Through a consortium led by La Salle Technova Barcelona and the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP), the initiative has provided the technical expertise and strategic framework required to ensure the long-term success and international competitiveness of the zone.

Activities

The FutuMed project is developed through a structured process of analysis, planning and strategic design to establish Medellín’s first Special Treatment Zone (ZTE) focused on science, technology and innovation. It begins with an initial ecosystem diagnosis and mapping of Quadruple Helix stakeholders, identifying key gaps and opportunities within the health technology sector and providing a solid foundation for the project’s development.

A central feature of the project is its co-creation approach, particularly in the design of the governance model and the portfolio of science, technology and innovation (CTI) instruments, ensuring the active involvement of ecosystem stakeholders. This is complemented by international benchmarking to align the strategy with global standards and define a long-term vision towards 2035. All of this is brought together in an integrated implementation roadmap that guides the coordinated and sustainable rollout of the FutuMed ZTE.
