Connect Macquarie Park Innovation District, IASP member from Australia, has taken a significant step towards advancing RNA research and manufacturing with the opening of a new facility, which marks a new era in the region’s ability to translate, develop, and manufacture life-saving RNA therapeutics.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for Australia to boost local capabilities to rapidly develop and manufacture vaccines and therapeutics. By supporting faster and more resilient domestic manufacturing, the new RNA facility will help improve preparedness for future health emergencies by enabling the fast production of RNA vaccines and treatment when they are needed the most, reducing reliance on constrained global supply chains.

Located within the Macquarie University Innovation Precinct, the facility includes advanced laboratories and support spaces that make it the only site in Australia capable of producing a wide range of new and existing RNA therapeutics under one roof.

Beyond vaccines, the applications of RNA technology are diverse, ranging from treatments for cancers and rare genetic diseases to agricultural and environmental solutions. The facility is expected to strengthen collaboration between universities, research institutes, and industry while also supporting investment attraction and talent development creating local jobs.

“The opening of this facility is a major milestone’ said Anoulack Chanthivong, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology ‘and a proud moment for our innovation sector. It gives our researchers, clinicians and industry partners a place where ideas can move rapidly from the lab bench to real world solutions that improve lives. By bringing together cutting edge equipment, world leading expertise and strong industry partnership under one roof, this centre […] opens the door to new breakthroughs, new jobs and new opportunities across health, biotech and agriculture”.
