UPTEC startup wants to help energy companies manage price fluctuations and save money

In the Iberian Peninsula, energy prices can fluctuate by more than 100% once every 37 days. An energy purchase worth €5,000 on the spot market can cost €10,000 the next day, which makes planning difficult without access to good forecasts, especially for smaller companies.

To address this issue, Astrolabium, a startup incubated at UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, has launched PowerNavigator, a platform that helps companies in the energy sector, such as energy market agents, renewable power producers, and energy providers, make better purchasing and hedging decisions without the need for a risk management team. The tool highlights the best opportunities to buy, sell and hedge through comprehensive simulations of the energy market.

Already available in Portugal and Spain, PowerNavigator shows the full range of possible prices and the probability of each one: for example, there may be a 70% probability that prices will be between €60 and €80/MWh, a 20% probability above €100/MWh and a 5% probability above €150/MWh.

Using weather forecasts and more than 10 years of market data to simulate 10,000 possible price scenarios, the platform improves the quality of available information and helps companies decide the best times to buy, reducing costs and ensuring operational efficiency.
