Málaga TechPark is poised to lead the way in adopting the Circular City model, making it one of the initial urban areas to take a significant stride towards a sustainable, eco-efficient, fully renewable, and digital future.

This challenge will be realized through an open ecosystem of public-private collaboration, with support from the administration, including the Junta de Andalucía, the Malaga City Council, Malaga TechPark, and Endesa – the driving force behind the project.

The eCityMálaga initiative stands as the inaugural urban prototype applying circular energy principles. This entails making generation and consumption benchmarks of efficiency by leveraging locally distributed resources, advancing renewable energy development, increasing electrification, and fostering flexible platforms that encourage local energy communities.

Urban furniture takes center stage in this project. Everyday elements will serve as a source of information about how they are used and human behaviour, functioning as tools to enhance the city’s overall efficiency.

Critical components ensuring the realisation of eCityMálaga include water management, the expansion of tree-lined areas, and an innovative waste management strategy. Modernising the treatment of raw water for irrigation becomes a cornerstone of the Circular Economy embraced by this urban model. The park itself will witness a threefold increase in its tree-covered areas, and waste reduction targets will lead to a 50% decrease, effectively doubling current recycling rates.

Through eCityMálaga, the park is poised to become a smart city management model. Digital platforms will integrate various services, including public lighting. Looking ahead, these platforms are envisioned to extend their coverage to areas such as operational processes, logistics, air monitoring quality, and even the management of connected vehicles for traffic optimisation.

Málaga TechParks’s commitment to eCityMálaga showcases a pioneering effort that can set a precedent for sustainable urban development, influencing future city planning worldwide.
