The UFRJ Science Park will be the new home of the Research and Innovation Campus of the Brazilian Center for Research in Physics (CBPF). With an estimated investment of R$ 400 million from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT/MCTI), the project includes the construction of a new 10,000 m² facility dedicated to cutting-edge science and technological innovation. The cornerstone ceremony was held on 16th June at the Park and featured the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, and the Rector of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Roberto Medronho.
The new CBPF Research Center will host laboratories and research lines in strategic fields such as Quantum Technologies, Nanosciences, Nanotechnology Applied to Health, Scientific Instrumentation Development, High-Energy Physics Detectors, and Artificial Intelligence Applications in Physics. The initiative also includes the creation of a Physics Innovation Hub, focused on knowledge transfer and support for the innovation ecosystem.
For the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, this is a historic day for Brazilian science. “I consider today a historic day for Brazilian science. With this partnership, we are moving toward a policy that has proven effective in achieving its goals — bringing scientific production closer to innovation so that it can be realized. So that Brazilian intelligence can be transformed into products and services for our population,” she stated.
“CBPF has always played a key role in fostering scientific institutions in Brazil. Now, we take another step toward connecting advanced science with innovation, strengthening national physics with infrastructure that brings together researchers, industry, and society,” emphasized Márcio Portes de Albuquerque, Director of CBPF.
The installation of the new CBPF center within the UFRJ Science Park reinforces the Park’s role as a strategic platform for the country’s scientific and technological development. According to Romildo Toledo, Director of the Park, the initiative further consolidates the institution’s position as a reference in integrated innovation. “Today, we strengthen the innovation ecosystem of Rio and Brazil. The establishment of the CBPF Research and Innovation Center at the UFRJ Science Park, dedicated to frontier science, is living proof that we are the territory where advanced research and excellence-driven institutions converge to drive national development,” he said.
For UFRJ Rector Roberto Medronho, this is certainly a successful partnership. “The arrival of CBPF at the University, within the Science Park, will bring significant advancements in science and technology, generating disruptive solutions for society,” he affirmed.
