New developments in knowledge-based economy have prompted cities to focus their competitive strategies on improving innovation. This shift has increased the value of innovative districts in cities that knowledge, creativity and innovation are new buzz words in economic and social development. Third generation of Science and technology parks (STPs) and Areas of Innovation (AOIs) is highly open, place-based and socially constructed that differ from other two based on pure technological developments to increase economic growth. Therefore, there are much room for maneuver on social and environmental issues toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the rise of place-based innovation this study scrutinizes the role of spatial and nonspatial proximities in the development of strategies and tactics in STPs in the case of Teknopark İzmir that embracing the tyranny of distance is utmost important for its further development.
