This paper examines innovation corridors—linear, networked ecosystems along transport routes—as tools for building global and Chinese innovation hubs. Unlike fragmented traditional science parks, corridors integrate academia, industry, and services through spatial fluidity and cross-regional collaboration, fostering high-value clusters.
Globally, corridors like California’s Highway 101 and Boston’s Route 128 succeed via proximity to elite universities and enterprises with venture capital. China’s Yangtze River Delta G60 Corridor advances strategic industries through integrated planning and industry-research linkages, boosting GDP and specialized SMEs.
Critical success pillars are university-driven research, enterprise clustering, element aggregation, and financial infrastructure. Challenges include administrative barriers and fragmented policies. Solutions propose establishing cross-regional governance mechanisms, forming innovation consortia, and creating "technology banks" using debt-equity hybrids and future tech valuation to de-risk SME financing.
By balancing state coordination with market forces, corridors offer China a framework to optimize resources, transcend regional silos, and cultivate global innovation leadership for world-class hub positioning.
